The Reykjavík Marathon is Iceland’s premier running event, held annually in August to coincide with the city’s Culture Night and featuring a scenic, flat course through the capital.

Course Highlights

The Islandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon course is renowned for its stunning scenery, taking runners through the heart of the world’s northernmost capital and along its beautiful coastline. The route begins near the iconic Tjörnin pond and winds through the residential areas of the city before heading out to the coastline. One of the most picturesque stretches is the run along the Faxaflói Bay, where the Snaefellsjökull glacier is often visible on clear days. The path also traverses the scenic Elliðaárdalur valley, a lush green area with a salmon river running through it, providing a peaceful contrast to the urban sections of the race. The course is largely flat, making it an excellent choice for runners looking for a personal best, while the crisp, clean Icelandic air provides an invigorating environment for distance running.

Race Details

The event is held annually on the third Saturday in August, coinciding with Menningarnótt (Reykjavík Culture Night), the city’s largest festival. This ensures a vibrant atmosphere with thousands of spectators cheering along the route. The marathon is certified by AIMS and features distances for all abilities, including the full marathon (42.2 km), half marathon (21.1 km), a 10K timed race, and a 3K fun run. The race starts on Sæmundargata, outside the University of Iceland, and finishes on Geirsgata in the city center. Start times are staggered, with competitive runners departing at 08:15 and general participants at 09:00 for the marathon and half-marathon distances. The time limit for the full marathon is a generous 6 hours and 30 minutes, accommodating a wide range of paces. Participants enjoy comprehensive support, with refreshment stations every 4-5 km providing water, Gatorade, and bananas.

Why Runners Love It

Runners are drawn to the Reykjavík Marathon not just for the race itself, but for the unique cultural experience that accompanies it. After finishing, participants often take advantage of the tradition of soaking in one of the city’s many geothermal swimming pools, which is included in the registration fee. The event’s history, dating back to 1984, adds a sense of tradition and prestige, attracting participants from over 80 countries. The community spirit is palpable, as locals often set up unofficial cheering stations outside their homes, offering music and encouragement. The race’s timing during Culture Night means that the celebrations continue long after the running stops, with concerts, exhibitions, and a spectacular fireworks display in the evening. Additionally, the event has a strong charitable focus; it is Iceland’s largest fundraising event, raising millions for various local causes. The combination of professional organization, natural beauty, and the city-wide festival makes the Reykjavík Marathon a truly unforgettable experience.
