Runners have the unique opportunity to complete a full 2.5-mile lap around the iconic oval track, including the tradition of kneeling to kiss the “Yard of Bricks” at the start/finish line. Along the way, participants pass through the historic town of Speedway and are cheered on by nearly 50 course entertainment acts, including live bands, dance squads, and spirited volunteers. The course concludes with a scenic finish near Military Park, where the post-race celebration begins.

The first waves, including athletes with disabilities and elite runners, traditionally begin at 07:30 AM, with subsequent waves starting every 10 minutes until approximately 08:20 AM. Alongside the signature 13.1-mile race, the weekend includes the Delta Dental 500 Festival 5K, which starts earlier at 07:15 AM. All participants must visit the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon Expo at the Indiana Convention Center in the days leading up to the race for packet pickup, as there is no race-day registration or pickup. The event is a USATF-sanctioned race and maintains an 18-minute-per-mile pace limit for the half-marathon.
