Course Highlights
The Shamrock Run Fest is the Pacific Northwest’s premier St. Patrick’s Day running celebration and Oregon’s largest road race, hosting nearly 19,000 runners along a picturesque course through the heart of Portland. The half marathon starts at 7:20 a.m. from SW Naito Parkway and Pine Street, winding through overgrown woods, waterfront paths, and historic bridges before returning to Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The 8K, 5K, Stride Walk, and Doernbecher Leprechaun Lap all start later in the morning, ensuring the party rolls on all day.
Race Details
Now in its 49th year, the Shamrock Run Fest presented by Toyota takes place on the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day in downtown Portland. The half marathon’s flat-to-rolling course along the Willamette River is a popular early-season tune-up for spring marathoners. The Expo and Packet Pick-up are held at the Oregon Convention Center in the days prior, and the post-race Finish Festival and Beer Garden runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Waterfront Park.
Why Runners Love It
The Shamrock Run is a beloved Portland tradition — a riot of green tutus, leprechaun hats, and bagpipes that makes even the most serious runners smile. Kell’s Irish Restaurant and Pub sponsors the legendary after-party, giving finishers a warm place to celebrate. With five distances, families and competitive runners alike find their perfect challenge, and the race sells out annually, so early registration is essential.
Race-Weekend Tips
Plan for busy parking and consider MAX light rail to the start. Packet pick-up at the Oregon Convention Center runs Friday evening and Saturday; avoid race-day pickup lines. Dress in green for best results. The half marathon course closes at a 15-minute-per-mile pace, so walkers should plan accordingly.
