DESCRIPTION:Spring comes one of the longest-running and most beloved traditions of the running community: the Lilac Bloomsday Run. While running enthusiasts look forward to the 7.46-mile race every year\, not everyone is familiar with its history and cultural significance. This is for anyone curious about the Lilac Bloomsday Run. \nThe History:\nThe Lilac Bloomsday Run began in 1977 when it was called the Washington March. The organizers Larry and Don Kardong\, and others\, had been inspired by the running boom that was sweeping through America. In fact\, the race drew inspiration from the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon\, both of which were gaining popularity at the time. Washington state was in need of a long-distance race of its own\, and the Kardong brothers wanted to fill that gap. They designed a course that would take runners through the city of Spokane and add to the city’s culture. The Lilac represents spring and new beginnings\, much like the intentions that many runners bring to the race. It’s a positive symbol of hope\, love and peace\, and runners receive Lilacs on the finish line as the flower represents “Strength Through Unity”. \nThe Participation:\nThe Bloomsday Run has grown significantly over the years. From only 1\,198 participants in its first year\, it now attracts over 40\,000 runners from all around the world. It is now recognized as one of the biggest races in the country and has even been featured in several documentaries and other films. The course itself has remained largely unchanged since its debut\, winding through quaint neighborhoods\, and little cities within the big city of Spokane. The race concludes at Riverfront Park where Bloomsday runners can enjoy a variety of activities\, as well as\, some refreshments and massages. \nThe Course:\nThe Bloomsday Run is particularly famous for its steep hill known as Doomsday Hill. It is by far the hardest part of the race\, and runners who master it are comforted knowing that they are over the largest hill of the course. As they reach the top\, an edifying sign awaits them: a hearse with a ghoulish skeleton emerging from its rooftop\, courtesy of a nearby mortuary. There are also bands that play along the course and challenges\, like beating the elite runners of the event. \nThe Community:\nFinally\, one of the best things about the Bloomsday Run is the sense of community that it brings. Not only are runners encouraged to participate and compete\, but they are also encouraged to connect with fellow participants and become a part of the Bloomsday family.
