Known as the “world’s wildest marathon\,” this race is not for the faint of heart. The stunning surroundings are reason enough to take on the challenge but add in the fact that it takes place in the heart of a wildlife reserve\, and you have a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Read on to learn more about the Big Five Marathon and why you should add it to your running bucket list. \nThe Course:\nThe Big Five Marathon takes place within the Entabeni Safari Conservancy\, which means runners are surrounded by some of Africa’s most majestic wildlife. As you run the 26.2-mile course\, you’ll have the chance to see the Big Five animals: lions\, leopards\, elephants\, buffalo\, and rhinos\, along with other incredible creatures such as giraffes\, zebras\, and wildebeests. Don’t worry\, though – the course is designed with safety in mind\, and rangers closely monitor the animals to ensure the safety of participants. \nThe course itself is challenging\, but the scenery and wildlife make it all worth it. Runners will traverse through mountains\, valleys\, grasslands\, and riverbeds\, all while surrounded by stunning views and incredible animals. The race is locally organized and works closely with the villages in the surrounding area. Community members are involved in everything from the race organization to the aid stations along the course. Additionally\, a portion of the race fees go towards conservation efforts in the area\, so not only are you getting to run through the wilderness\, but you’re contributing to its preservation as well. \nThe Preparation:\nIf you’re thinking of taking on this unique marathon challenge\, there are a few important things to keep in mind. First\, be prepared for the weather – the race takes place in June\, which is the middle of winter in South Africa. Temperatures can be chilly\, so pack accordingly. SUMMARY:Perpetua Coast Trail Run
DESCRIPTION:Course Highlights\nThe Perpetua Coast trail races take place on the scenic headlands and rainforest trails around Cape Perpetua\, Oregon’s highest coastal viewpoint at 803 feet above sea level. The half marathon course is a gorgeous point-to-point route with 2\,500 feet of elevation gain and 2\,600 feet of descent\, featuring miles of stunning old-growth rainforest singletrack\, panoramic coastline views from the summit of Cape Perpetua\, and rocky bluff paths skirting the shoreline near Yachats. The 50K and 20-miler offer even longer explorations of this spectacular coastal landscape on Saturday\, while the half marathon and 10K run on Sunday. \nRace Details\nThe 2026 Perpetua Coast weekend takes place October 3-4\, 2026\, based at The Adobe Resort (1555 Hwy 101 N\, Yachats\, OR 97498). On Saturday: 50K starts at 8:00 a.m. and the 20-miler at 8:05 a.m. On Sunday: shuttle buses depart for the half marathon start at 8:25 a.m. (race start 9:00 a.m.) and for the 10K at 8:55 a.m. (start 9:30 a.m.). All bib pickup is at The Adobe’s Perpetua Conference Room. Organized by Daybreak Racing. \nWhy Runners Love It\nYachats — pronounced ‘ya-hots’ — is one of Oregon’s least-discovered coastal gems\, and the Perpetua Coast race puts it on every serious trail runner’s map. The combination of old-growth Sitka spruce rainforest\, dramatic ocean bluffs\, and the summit of Cape Perpetua creates trail running scenery that rivals anything in the Pacific Northwest. The Adobe Resort provides a luxurious base for a full race weekend\, with a Friday evening shake-out run and sunset gathering building community before the main events. \nRace-Weekend Tips\nThis is a challenging course with significant elevation — the half marathon’s 2\,500 feet of gain requires solid trail fitness and hill training. Shuttle buses are required for the half and 10K; arrive early. October on the Oregon coast can mean rain\, wind\, and cold — pack waterproof layers. Book The Adobe Resort or nearby Yachats accommodation early. The Friday evening shake-out run and sunset gathering are genuinely fun and worth attending. \nExplore Oregon’s wild coast on foot — register at Daybreak Racing.
