The BOLDERBoulder 10K<\/strong> is one of the largest and most beloved 10K races in the world \u2014 billed as “America’s All-Time Best 10K”<\/em> and drawing more than 50,000 participants every Memorial Day to Boulder, Colorado. Founded in 1979 by Olympic marathoner Frank Shorter, the race has become a Boulder institution that combines elite-level international competition with a costume-filled community festival.<\/p>\n

The Famous Wave Start<\/h3>\n

Because of its massive field, BOLDERBoulder uses an innovative wave-start format with more than 100 waves separated by a few minutes each, organized by predicted finish time. The system lets runners of every ability \u2014 from sub-30-minute elites to family walkers \u2014 start with peers at their pace. It also turns the race into a parade that lasts most of the morning, with bands, dancers, slip-and-slides, and belly-flop pools lining the course as runners flow through Boulder’s neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Course and Finish at Folsom Field<\/h3>\n

The 10K course winds through Boulder’s tree-lined streets with the dramatic Flatirons rock formations rising on the western horizon. The course climbs gently and finishes inside the University of Colorado’s Folsom Field football stadium, where every finisher runs around the field to the roar of tens of thousands of cheering spectators. The finish-line crowd inside the stadium is something every U.S. runner should experience at least once.<\/p>\n

Memorial Day Tribute<\/h3>\n

After the citizens’ race, BOLDERBoulder hosts a moving Memorial Day Tribute inside Folsom Field featuring a parachute team, military flyover, and ceremonies honoring fallen U.S. service members. It’s one of the most meaningful Memorial Day observances in American sport, and many runners stay to watch.<\/p>\n
