The Clarence Demar Marathon is one of the most coveted races in the running community. This race, named in honor of Clarence Demar, the seven-time Boston Marathon winner, is an annual event held in Keene, New Hampshire. It attracts runners from all over the country and the world who come together to test their endurance and celebrate the sport of running. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll look at everything you need to know about the Clarence Demar Marathon, including the course, the logistics, and the training required to run this challenging race.

Course Description:

The Clarence Demar marathon course is a challenging one that will test even the most experienced runners. The marathon course is a point-to-point race that starts in Gilsum and finishes in downtown Keene. The course is a mixture of terrain, including paved roads, dirt and gravel trails, and some hills that rise over 800 feet. Runners will enjoy the beautiful scenery, but they should also be prepared for some challenging aspects of the course.

Preparation & Training:

To prepare for the Clarence Demar Marathon, you’ll need to train for a few months, incorporating high-intensity interval training, tempo runs, hill work, and endurance runs. This race requires that you be prepared for the hills, so find hilly routes to train on. You may also want to use a training schedule that builds up slowly to ensure that you don’t get injured or burned out. Make sure to take rest days and recovery days to allow your body to repair the muscles and prevent injuries.

Race Logistics:

The Clarence Demar Marathon takes place on a Sunday in September. Runners are required to pick up their bib number and timing chip at the Expo the day before the race, which is held at Keene State College. You’ll also receive a technical t-shirt at the Expo, which we suggest wearing on race day. Race day starts early, with a shuttle bus taking runners from Keene to Gilsum starting around 6 a.m. Runners are grouped by start time, with the fastest runners starting first. At the finish line, there is a large crowd cheering for the runners and vendors selling various products.

In-Race Nutrition:

The Clarence Demar Marathon provides water stations every two miles and food options at various points on the course. To maintain endurance and energy during the race, most runners use energy gels, chews, or bars along with water. There are also several aid stations that provide sports drinks. Make sure you bring your own gels or chews that you’ve used before the race and that you are comfortable eating.

Post-Race Festivities:

Once you’ve completed the race, make sure to celebrate your accomplishment with some post-race festivities. The Clarence Demar Marathon has a food tent with various foods, including bagels, bananas, and other snacks. There’s also a medical tent for the injured. The award ceremony is held shortly after the top finishers have crossed the finish line, and you should stick around to cheer the rest of the runners. While the post-race festivities are a great time, make sure you rest and hydrate before any significant activities like sightseeing or driving.

The Clarence Demar Marathon is a challenging but highly rewarding experience that shouldn’t be missed by anyone in the running community. To prepare for the race, start training early and progressively work your way up, targeting your weaker areas. On race day, take advantage of in-race nutrition and be prepared to work hard. After enjoying the post-race festivities and perhaps reflecting on your accomplishment, come back for the next race.
