Course Highlights
The San Antonio Marathon course is a genuine tour of the city’s soul. Starting near downtown’s Main Plaza and the San Fernando Cathedral, runners pass the historic Alamo and wind along the cypress-lined River Walk. The route then moves through the leafy King William and Southtown districts, up the St. Mary’s Strip, into Brackenridge Park and through Alamo Heights and Olmos Park, before returning down Broadway to finish at Hemisfair beside the Tower of the Americas. The course is USATF-certified, fully rolling (approximately 909 ft total gain), and qualifies for the Boston Marathon.
Race Details
The 2026 San Antonio Marathon weekend runs December 4–6. The Friday evening SATX 5K starts at 8:00 PM at Hemisfair (start/finish). The full marathon and half marathon start together at 7:15 AM Sunday, December 6 near downtown’s Main Plaza, with both finishing at the Finish Line Fiesta at Hemisfair. The marathon time limit is 7 hours; the half marathon limit is 4 hours. Three timed cutoff points are positioned along the full marathon route.
City Roots & History
After the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio series concluded following its 2024 edition, San Antonio Sports — the city’s nonprofit sports commission — partnered with the City of San Antonio to launch a locally produced successor. The inaugural San Antonio Marathon in December 2025 marked the beginning of a new civic running tradition rooted in the city itself. The 2026 race is only the second running of this reborn event, making it a piece of San Antonio running history in the making.
Why Runners Love It
San Antonio’s mild December weather — typically in the mid-50s at race start — is among the best in Texas for long-distance racing. The course’s combination of historic architecture, the River Walk, and leafy residential neighborhoods makes for a visually stunning run. The Hemisfair finish line, with the Tower of the Americas as a backdrop, is one of the most photogenic finish areas in the country. With a Boston-qualifying course certification and growing field, this race offers both competitive and bucket-list appeal.
