Course Highlights
The Schlotzsky’s Bun Run takes place in the heart of The Domain — Austin’s premier mixed-use shopping and entertainment district in north Austin — at Century Oak Terrace. The 5K course winds through The Domain’s pedestrian-friendly streets and green spaces, making it accessible and scenic for runners of all abilities. The companion Kids 1K is a perfect introduction to racing for younger participants, while the Fastest Dog in Austin contest adds a uniquely Austin twist that draws crowds and cameras in equal measure.
Race Details
The Bun Run is a fall event typically held in late September. The Kids K starts at 8:00 AM followed by the 5K at 8:30 AM. There is no prize purse for the open division, but the competitive field runs for $500 in prize money split between the top male and female finishers. Race-day and packet pickup registration is available. Proceeds benefit JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), with Schlotzsky’s having contributed nearly $500,000 to JDRF since naming it their national cause in 2012.
A Quirky Austin Tradition
The Schlotzsky’s Bun Run captures the playful spirit that Austin is famous for — a race that takes the competition seriously enough to offer cash prizes but remains accessible enough that costumes, family strollers, and dogs on leashes all share the course. The Domain start/finish provides excellent post-race dining options from the many restaurants nearby, making it easy to extend the fun into a full morning out.
Why Runners Love It
The Bun Run is a rare breed of race that genuinely serves every category of runner simultaneously — the competitive racer chasing the cash prize, the casual jogger logging weekend miles, the parent pushing a stroller, the dog owner who trained their retriever to run a 1K. September in Austin is the beginning of the transition out of summer heat, bringing relief after months of brutal temperatures. The charitable cause (JDRF) adds meaning to every entry, and the Schlotzsky’s brand connection means runners can count on some food fun post-race.
