The Big Sur International Marathon is a premier point-to-point race along California’s Highway 1, famous for its stunning coastal views and challenging terrain.

Course Highlights

The Big Sur International Marathon offers a breathtaking point-to-point course along California’s scenic Highway 1, starting at the majestic Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Runners traverse a challenging terrain with over 2,100 feet of elevation gain, featuring rolling hills and the formidable climb to Hurricane Point. The course’s centerpiece is the iconic Bixby Bridge, where a tuxedo-clad pianist serenades participants against a backdrop of crashing waves and coastal cliffs. The route continues through redwood forests and pastoral landscapes, ultimately concluding at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Carmel. The net downhill finish provides a scenic reward after a grueling coastal journey.

Why Runners Love It

Renowned as one of the most beautiful marathons in the world, Big Sur is a “bucket list” event limited to approximately 4,500 runners to maintain its boutique atmosphere. Its prestige is cemented by being the nation’s first nationally-designated Scenic Highway course and a Boston Marathon qualifier. Runners are drawn to the unique “Big Sur spirit,” characterized by the dramatic scenery of the Pacific Ocean and the enchanting sounds of the Bixby Bridge pianist. The race’s exclusivity, combined with the rigorous physical challenge and the sheer natural splendor of the Monterey coast, creates an unforgettable and iconic running experience.

Race Weekend Tips

Race weekend begins with the Health & Fitness Expo at the Monterey Conference Center, where participants must pick up their packets. Since Highway 1 is closed to private vehicles on race morning, runners must take official shuttle buses from designated Monterey Peninsula locations; allow ample time for transport. Accommodation in Carmel or Monterey should be booked well in advance. Weather can be unpredictable, often starting cool and misty with potential for strong headwinds, so dress in layers. The post-race Finish Village offers celebration and local hospitality.

History & Charity

Established in 1986 by Bill Burleigh, the Big Sur International Marathon was born from a vision of a race along the stunning Pacific coast. The first event drew 1,800 runners and has since grown into a world-renowned boutique marathon. Managed by the Big Sur Marathon Foundation (BSMF), the race supports community health through initiatives like JUST RUN, a youth fitness program. Over its history, the marathon has faced challenges from Mother Nature, including gale-force winds and mudslides, but remains a testament to the resilience and beauty of the Monterey Peninsula.
