The course measures approximately 102.5 miles and features a staggering 33,197 feet of elevation gain and an equal amount of descent, totaling 66,394 feet of elevation change. This “graduate level” run has an average elevation of over 11,000 feet, making the thin mountain air a significant factor for all participants.
The race starts at 06:00 on July 10, 2026, from the Silverton School gym. Runners have a strict 48-hour time limit to complete the loop. Because of the extreme difficulty and environmental sensitivity of the course, the field is strictly limited to around 145 runners, chosen through a highly competitive lottery system. Participants must demonstrate significant mountain running experience and complete a qualifying race to be eligible. The race alternates direction every year; the clockwise route used in 2026 offers a unique perspective on the San Juan Range compared to the counter-clockwise years.
