The Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run is the largest 10-mile road race in the United States — a downhill point-to-point that runs straight down Broad Street through the heart of Philadelphia, from the Olney neighborhood in North Philly all the way to the Navy Yard in South Philly. With a flat, fast course and a celebratory citywide atmosphere, it’s one of the most beloved races on the East Coast running calendar.
The Course
Broad Street is one of the longest straight urban streets in the U.S., and the race uses every bit of it. Runners pass Temple University, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, City Hall (with William Penn watching from atop the tower), the historic Avenue of the Arts, South Philly’s iconic neighborhoods, and finish near the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The course is nearly arrow-straight and features a net elevation drop, making it a popular PR opportunity for runners targeting the 10-mile distance.
A True Philadelphia Tradition
Each May, the Broad Street Run brings out the entire city of Philadelphia. Neighborhoods compete for the loudest cheer zones, marching bands and DJs set up on corners, and tens of thousands of spectators line the route from start to finish. The race regularly attracts 35,000+ participants and is a lottery-entry event — securing a bib is half the challenge.
