The Ladakh Marathon is a prestigious high-altitude race held in Leh, India, known as the world’s highest marathon with elevations reaching up to 17,618 feet. It offers multiple distances, including two extreme ultra-marathons, and provides runners with stunning views of the Himalayas and ancient monasteries.
Course Highlights
The Ladakh Marathon is celebrated as the “World’s Highest Marathon,” offering a course that is as breathtaking as it is challenging. Runners traverse a landscape characterized by dramatic mountain vistas, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and the serene Indus River. The marathon distance (42.195 km) starts at the NDS Memorial Stadium in Leh, descending toward the Choglamsar Bridge. From there, the route follows the Chuchot road, with the majestic Stok range of mountains on the right and the Indus River on the left. Notable landmarks along the course include the Stakna Monastery, perched atop a tiger-shaped rock, the historic Thiksey Monastery, and the Shey Palace. The high-altitude environment, ranging from 11,500 to over 17,600 feet, provides a unique backdrop that few other races in the world can match.

Why Runners Love It
Runners are drawn to the Ladakh Marathon for the opportunity to test their limits in one of the most rugged and beautiful environments on Earth. It is a race of resilience, born out of the recovery efforts following the 2010 flash floods in the region. Participants often speak of the profound sense of camaraderie with local Ladakhi runners and the incredible support from the local community. The sheer physical challenge of running at high altitude, combined with the spiritual and cultural richness of the “Land of High Passes,” makes this more than just a race—it is a life-changing journey. Crossing the finish line at the NDS Memorial Stadium provides a sense of accomplishment that is unparalleled, as runners join the elite ranks of those who have conquered the highest marathon in the world.
