The Tor des Géants is an iconic 330km endurance trail race through Italy’s Aosta Valley, featuring 24,000m of elevation gain and a 150-hour time limit. It is widely considered one of the world’s most challenging mountain ultras, traversing the technical trails of the Alta Via 1 and 2.

Course Highlights

The Tor des Géants, often referred to as the TOR330, is a legendary endurance trail race that takes runners on an extraordinary journey through the heart of the Italian Alps. Starting and finishing in the picturesque mountain town of Courmayeur, the course follows a massive loop through the Aosta Valley, tracing the paths of the Alta Via 1 and Alta Via 2. Spanning approximately 330 kilometers (205 miles) with a staggering 24,000 meters (78,740 feet) of positive elevation gain, the route crosses 25 mountain passes above 2,000 meters. Runners are treated to unparalleled views of the “four giants” of the Alps: Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and Gran Paradiso. The terrain is predominantly technical mountain trails, with 90% of the course on unpaved paths, challenging athletes with steep climbs and rugged descents that test even the most experienced trail runners.

Race Details

Founded in 2010, the Tor des Géants is unique among ultra-endurance races because it does not impose mandatory stages. The clock never stops, and the winner is simply the first to cross the finish line, leaving individuals to manage their own strategy for rest, nutrition, and pacing. Participants must complete the course within a maximum time limit of 150 hours. To support this Herculean effort, the organization provides seven major “Life Bases” (located in Valgrisenche, Cogne, Donnas, Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Valtournenche, and Ollomont) where runners can access drop bags, hot food, and sleeping facilities. Additionally, there are over 40 refreshment points scattered every 7 to 10 kilometers. The race weekend is a massive logistical operation involving over 2,000 volunteers, known for their incredible hospitality and support throughout the Aosta Valley’s 34 municipalities.

Why Runners Love It

Runners from around the globe are drawn to the Tor des Géants for its reputation as one of the hardest and most beautiful mountain races on Earth. Beyond the physical challenge, the race is celebrated for its profound sense of community and the emotional connection forged between the “giants” and the local population. The atmosphere in the Life Bases and the warm welcome in every mountain hut create a unique bond that transcends competition. For many, the race is a transformative spiritual experience, pushing the boundaries of human endurance in the silent majesty of the high mountains. The “Tor” is more than a race; it is a pilgrimage through the wild beauty of the Alps. To secure your spot in this life-changing event, keep an eye on the registration windows for the 2026 edition.
